Omega-3s and Krill Oil: The health benefits you need to know

By on 12th Dec 2025

Omega-3 fatty acids are considered ‘healthy fats’ which, research shows, support heart health. Similar research suggests fatty acids can also help lower triglycerides (a type of fat used in the blood used for energy). Certain types of omega-3s include DHA (omega-3 fatty acid essential for cell function, particularly in the brain and eyes), EPA (found in seafood), and ALA, alpha-linolenic acid (found in plants).  Foods that can help add omega-3s to your diet include fatty fish (salmon and mackerel), flaxseed, and chia seeds.

Krill oil is another source of omega-3 fatty acids.  But what is the difference in general Omega-3 fatty acids, versus krill oil?  The simple answer is absorption of the nutrients in the body, their origin, concentration levels, and increased costs.

Krill oil is derived from small crustaceans (tiny shrimp, for example), containing omega-3s in a phospholipid form, allowing better absorption, while including astaxanthin, an antioxidant pigment primarily found in marine life like salmon, shrimp, and krill.  Krill oil is typically more concentrated than general omega-3s per serving.  Further, the oil is more expensive (three to ten times higher) for the same dosage due to higher expenses for harvesting and processing methods.

Though krill oil is supported by much more research than general omega-3 3-fatty acids.

As with omega-3 fatty acids, research suggests krill oil may help lower triglycerides and “bad” LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, while raising good HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. It also may help reduce inflammation of blood vessels, restore inflammatory balance and cellular resilience, while lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke, balance heart rhythms, and improve vascular function.

The health benefits of krill oil

Krill oils can also reduce inflammation, joint pain, and stiffness, thus aiding athletic recovery, particularly in people with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Other benefits include:

  • Healthier skin: Antioxidants and omega-3s may help improve skin hydration and overall skin health.
  • Pre-menstrual symptom (PMS) relief: Studies indicate krill oil may be more effective than general fish oil at reducing both the physical pain and emotional symptoms associated with PMS.
  • Eye health: DHA in krill oil is good for maintaining eye health.
  • Brain function: Omega-3s are crucial for brain health.  Various portions of research align with neuroprotective effects.

One of the most concentrated sources of krill oil is considered Neptune Krill Oil (NKO), which supports cardiovascular, cognitive, joint, skin, and cellular health.

As the scientific formulator of The ROOT Brands®, I have created hundreds of products for the organization and am pleased to announce we recently launched KO3 – Advanced Omega-3 Supplement with NKO®.

Sourced from pure Antarctic krill, KO3 is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, and astaxanthin for a more bioavailable alternative than other products on the market. This formula is designed to enable faster absorption and deeper cellular integration, while protecting against oxidative stress and free radical damage.

Of course, it is always important to speak with a healthcare provider before taking any vitamin supplement, or nutraceutical, including krill oil, to mitigate any adverse reactions with prescription medications. Especially patients taking blood thinners, individuals with bleeding disorders, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and those with diabetes. Further, anyone with a fish, seafood, or shellfish allergy should also always avoid krill oil and/or omega-3 supplements in general.
