It’s been near impossible to find hand sanitizer or disinfectants since the coronavirus hit. But you can make them at home using natural ingredients, all you need to do is go to your local liquor store. However, it’s important to understand the distinction between alcohols. Rubbing alcohol –that has been near impossible to find, and the alcohol you drink, is very different. Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl and is a more potent type of alcohol, whereas drinking alcohol is ethyl (or ethanol), which is not as strong but it can help kill germs, especially when combined with essential oils.
Disinfectant Spray
To make this you will need Vodka or even a clear “moonshine” you will want to find at least a 70-90% alcohol content. In a 32 ounce spray bottle you want to add half alcohol and half distilled water (if there’s a water shortage you can boil your water and let sit until cool). To this you will want to add:
25 drops of orange essential oil,
15 drops of lavender essential oil
10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
5 drops of tea tree oil
Spray on hard surfaces and let sit for a few minutes before wiping. Add to a smaller spray bottle to take with you on the go to spray on hands.
Hand Gel
You will want to combine the following in a bowl:
⅓ cup of aloe vera gel
⅔ cup of vodka
1 tsp of olive oil (optional to help with dry skin)
15 drops of a “thieves” type of oil or if you don’t have that, add the following essential oils:
*3 drops of orange, 3 drops of rosemary, 3 drops of eucalyptus, and 3 drops cinnamon
Don’t worry if you don’t have the above oils. Below are other great alternatives that offer anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-microbial benefits.
Lavender, tea tree, thyme, oregano, clove, and thyme.
