The holiday season is upon us, and that inevitably means two months of parties, family gatherings, and social environments that include festive cocktails. It’s not always easy to make healthy choices during this time of year, especially when it comes to libations, so we’re here to discuss how to stay on track with your health and wellness goals in terms of alcohol.
First off, we have to start with the recommended alcohol serving. The CDC recommends that alcohol should be consumed in moderation, which includes up to 1 drink per day for women, and up to 2 drinks per day for men, and that adults of legal drinking age are 21+. We also recommend switching off between alcohol and water to stay hydrated to make sure you’re not feeling especially crummy the next day.
Next, it’s important to be educated on alcohol choices and options in front of you. Follow these tips and tricks when choosing your drink of choice:
1. Stick to the cocktails that have the least amount of sugar. Sometimes, cocktails have so much sugar that it can be more calories than a plate of cookies, or even a Big Mac! Sugar sources in a cocktail may include: refined, white sugar, sugar cube, honey, agave, and much more.
2. When choosing a cocktail with sugar, choose one that is made using a natural source, such as honey. Natural sources may deliver some added health benefits! Honey, for example, is a probiotic.
3. Choose the cocktail that has the fewest amount of ingredients. Choosing a cocktail that has many ingredients may lead to greater caloric or sugar intake. By knowing what you are consuming and how much of it, you have control of your own health.
