“You can be fully in charge of your life only if you can acknowledge the reality of your body, in all its visceral dimensions.” -Bessel van der Kolk, M.D.
I think it’s safe to say all of us have experienced some sort of trauma in our lives. From car accidents (I’ve been in 10) to sudden, premature deaths of family members, to experiences of extreme danger and/or injury, trauma is a very real challenge in our lives.
Some of us can bounce back relatively unscathed by our experiences. Others suffer a more lasting impact from traumatic events and encounter various symptoms of post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD). I fall into the latter group. I have had struggles with anxiety and stress, depression, and fibromyalgia. My anxiety and chronic low back pain is a recurring issue that floating helps to alleviate.
I have tried yoga, hot yoga, chiropractic, acupuncture, hot stone, deep tissue, Swedish and Cranio-sacral massage; reiki, traditional talk therapy, brain-spotting, and many other therapeutic interventions that have all been effective for alleviating symptoms in the short-term. But floating in conjunction with some of the aforementioned therapies has been the missing link in maintaining a more lasting sense of health and well-being.
Floating in conjunction with other therapies and healing modalities has helped me dig deeper beneath the surface of symptoms, to identify more of the underlying root causes of nagging aches and pains.
By taking the time (at least twice a month) to balance my body and mind in a float tank, I get a clearer picture of what my needs are. Then, when I decide to schedule an appointment for a massage or acupuncture, I am more adept at guiding my health practitioners towards my true needs as a patient. My float practice is teaching me to take greater responsibility for my health and wellness; which in turn can only help those who are trying to help me.
Floating has also opened me up for breakthroughs in talk therapy. I have floated before and after counseling sessions to great effect. I (and my therapists) have noticed that floating before or after a session can have more significant, more lasting results than I may have otherwise experienced without floating.
“People can never get better without knowing what they know and feeling how they feel.”
-Elvin Semrad
