Nashville’s Health is Failing

By H&W on 7th Mar 2018
According to recent news from nashvillehealth.org, “Nashville is a thriving, energetic city, in the midst of an economic boom, we have one of the highest rates of employment growth of any large metropolis since the Great Recession. Additionally, we are known globally as an innovative healthcare center. Unfortunately, the overall health of our own population is poor – which, left unaddressed, threatens our long-term vitality”. They quote the following statistics to prove their point:.
Nashville is:
-5th in health among a 5 city peer group including Austin, Charlotte, Cincinnati and Raleigh.
-36% of public school children in Nashville are obese.
-21% of Nashvillians smoke, against a national target of 12%.
-45th in community fitness out of 50 metropolitan areas.
-19% of the population face severe housing shortages.
-19% are uninsured against 13% nationally.
-99 fast food outlets per 100k population vs 79 per 100k nationally.
