Last year, I committed to a 27 day juice fast during my birthday month. It was awesome! I felt clear, energized and connected. So, this year I wanted to do it again. However, I decided to make it a more spiritual fast and do it for 40 days and add fermented foods to my cleanse.
You may be asking, what are fermented foods? Fermented foods contain probiotics, which are great for digestion, as they fill your gut with healthy bacteria and balance its microbiome. Some examples of fermented foods are kombucha, yogurt, kefir, miso, sauerkraut, kimchi, kavass, and tempeh. You can ferment just about any vegetable. My husband has been so sweet and thoughtful during my cleanse! He has fermented cauliflower, carrots, green beans, and napa cabbage. It was easy, delicious and great for my digestion, brain and immune health!
Did you know that at least 70 percent of our immune system is in the gut? It’s true. One of the biggest influencers in immune function is the gut microbiome.
While fermented foods are packed with nutrition, too much of a good thing can bring some not so appetizing side-effects. Turns out that too much good bacteria in your body actually causes the same negative reaction as an excess of bad bacteria, so make sure to listen to your body and don’t overdo it.
My focus during these 40 days is to get really clear (body, mind & spirit) and live in alignment with God’s will. I will be doing a juice/liquid fast, including fermented foods, and will be reading the Bible daily in search of healing bible verses.
It is your choice of what you would like to fast from. It may be bread, sugar, alcohol, coffee, social media, or watching tv.
Fasting isn’t about giving up something we enjoy. There isn’t any real spiritual value in giving up chocolate or soft drinks. The point of fasting is that we give up something that may distract us to help us pay better attention to our deeper hungers and desires.
