I recently launched a private practice as a holistic bodywork therapist in Nashville. One of the modalities I use in my practice is Craniosacral Therapy — a subtle but profound healing technique that works with the body’s innate intelligence to promote self-healing. I’d like to share some information about this modality and the many ways it can improve your well-being.
What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, light-touch modality that helps the body heal at the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual level. Put simply, this modality provides a nourishing reset for the nervous system. It helps us move from an activated state of stress to a more regulated state of peace and ease. When we receive Craniosacral Therapy, our brain drops into a theta brain wave state — a liminal space between wakefulness and sleep. In this state of deep mental and physical relaxation, our body’s wisdom can come forth to release what needs to be released and return our being to a state of balance and harmony.
Craniosacral Therapy works with the body’s craniosacral system, which includes the membranes that wrap around our brain and spinal cord and the cerebrospinal fluid that flows through them. By releasing energetic blockages and connective tissue restrictions that might be present within this system, Craniosacral Therapy helps improve the flow of cerebrospinal fluid — and this allows the body to release tension and make structural corrections that promote balance and ease within the body.
What are the benefits of Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy is safe and beneficial for everyone to receive. It’s a deeply relaxing antidote to the stress most bodies live with, and it provides a tune-up for the physical and energetic systems that keep our bodies healthy and resilient. Everyone stands to benefit from receiving this work on a regular basis.
That said, Craniosacral Therapy can be especially transformational for clients with a history of trauma and people who live with chronic stress and anxiety. Craniosacral helps these individuals release trauma from their physical body, reconnect with their body in a way that feels comfortable and safe, and reintegrate different parts of themselves which may have become fractured as a result of trauma (e.g., bridge the divide between mind and body). Craniosacral Therapy is also a wonderful modality for pregnant and postpartum women — especially women who have had traumatic birth experiences and/or C-sections.
Most of my clients report feeling relaxed, cleansed, light, open, grounded, clear-headed, and at peace after receiving Craniosacral Therapy. These positive effects can last for days — and sometimes weeks — after their session. Some clients experience emotional releases during or after their session, and many experience immediate shifts, such as reduced muscle tension or pain, a quieting or disappearance of anxious thoughts, a more profound sense of connection to their physical body, and more clarity or a new perspective on a challenge they’re currently facing.
What conditions does Craniosacral Therapy help with?
The improvements people access through Craniosacral Therapy build on themselves, and when people receive this type of bodywork on a regular basis, they might find that they start to experience more balance, ease, contentment, comfort, mental clarity, and safety in their body on a day-to-day basis.
