Author and entrepreneur Alane Boyd is very candid about her historical struggles with weight loss. After years of yo-yo dieting, a visit to her doctor shocked her into changing her relationship with food. “My whole life, I have struggled with my weight, and I was at a breaking point where I said that I needed to do something about it,” she explains in a conversation with Nashville Health & Wellness Magazine. “When I was in my late 20s, I went to the doctor and they said that I would have to go on medication for high blood pressure medication. So I needed to figure out a way, which was sustainable for me, to keep my weight at a healthy level.”
In her experience, she understood that it was vital to see her health journey as a long-term change in lifestyle. “When people decide to lose weight, they see it like a sprint and they want to lose it fast. I said, ‘I’m not doing that, I’m doing a marathon and I’m doing it slowly.’ So that’s what I did and I lost 40 pounds.”
The inspiration for her healthy eating, burger-focused cookbook ‘Burger Fit’ came from her experience with a family of fairly fussy eaters. “My parents would come and visit me, and my Dad thinks he doesn’t like vegetables, so I decided that I was going to trick them into eating it. I started putting vegetables in burgers, not only because everybody likes them but also because they are a safe food, nobody asks what is in a burger before they eat it. So I could sneak healthy ingredients in there!”
Within the book, Alane outlines 20 recipes for healthy versions of hamburgers. “I worked with a chef from Happy Belly in Nashville, and she created toppings and some of the sides, so we are presenting different ways to eat vegetables. You might not be able to trick everybody into eating all of the side dishes, but you can have something healthy.” Alane also consulted with a nutritionist for each recipe, so there are additional tips for each burger in the cookbook.
Alane will be signing books and meeting fans at the upcoming Nashville Health & Wellness Fest, which will take place on 1 June 2019. To purchase your ticket, click here.
