The YMCA is in discussions to open a new East Nashville facility, as a result of significant population growth in the area. As The Tennessean reports, “The facility would be at MDHA’s Cayce Place mixed-income housing development near Historic Edgefield and Nissan Stadium, off Shelby Avenue.”
The YMCA is committed to working with communities on health, wellbeing and social responsibility, and currently has a presence in more than 10,000 neighborhoods across the USA.
In Nashville, there are 14 YMCA organizations that serve the city and surrounding areas. “We’ve begun the process of vetting it and will need to better understand a number of factors before making a final decision,” YMCA of Middle Tennessee Chief Strategy Officer Jessica Fain told The Tennessean. “Is there sufficient demand for a facility in the community? Would it have any negative impact on nearby YMCAs like downtown and Margaret Maddox?”
Education on the importance of health and exercise in the community is a core part of the YMCA’s ethos and message. It focuses “Empowering young people to reach their full potential, improving individual and community well-being and giving back and inspiring action in our communities.”
