The Function of the Microbiome

By on 1st Aug 2018

Gut Microbes word cloud on a white background.

Our digestive tracts are filled with countless bacteria, numbering more than there are brain cells in the brain. But what exactly do these bacteria accomplish?

  • Necessary for processing and metabolizing important vitamins and minerals: such as vitamins B9 (folate), B12, K; and calcium, magnesium, iron, and many other minerals.
  • Protecting the digestive system from infection and parasites. When foreign organisms invade, beneficial bacteria help prevent them from taking hold and causing sickness or illness.
  • Boosting immunity. Approximately 70-80% of your immune system is in your gut.  Besides preventing infection in the digestive tract, probiotic bacteria have a positive connection to immune-related disorders such as allergies (seasonal and food) and eczema.
  • Combating ulcer-causing bacteria. Similar to how they prevent bacteria and parasites, intestinal microflora can prevent ulcers through their protective abilities.
  • Helping regulate digestive disorders, such as IBS, colitis, and Crohn’s.
  • Supporting autoimmune disorders like celiac and pernicious anemia (vitamin B12 deficiency).
  • Ensuring proper thyroid function. The microbiome plays an important role in converting thyroid hormones into forms the body needs for adequate metabolism, thus playing an important part of the thyroid cycle.
  • By aiding with digestion, probiotic intake indirectly supports lowering high cholesterol and blood pressure, thus lowering chances of heart disease.
  • Regulating appetite, mood, sleep, and relaxation.  There are more neurotransmitters in your gut than in your brain.  It is estimated that 90 percent of the body’s serotonin is made in the digestive tract.

Clearly, digestive health – particularly that of the microbiome – has a widespread influence on health everywhere in the body.

How to Keep a Healthy Microbiome

Gut bacteria have a far-reaching influence over the entire body. If not taken care of correctly, along with the rest of the digestive system, your immune system & nervous system can not function optimally.
