One of the best parts of late summer and early fall is the abundance of fresh produce. Living in Tennessee we have an abundance of produce available during peak growing seasons and some farms are opening their fields to you. Early summer may be berry picking season but as the fall approaches it’s time for apples, peaches, sweet corn, and just as October hits, pumpkins!
Many farmers are opening their doors to educate and share the pleasure of picking your own food, for the true farm to table experience. Many of these farms that are opening their doors are the small family owned and operated farms focusing on organic and GMO-free produce. So go on and spend a day at the farm enjoying a step away from the hustle and bustle. Check out these special spots around Middle Tennessee that you can pick your own!
Batey Farm – Murfreesboro, Tennessee
This beautiful family-owned farm is acres of farmland that includes fruit, vegetables, pigs, and chickens galore. Their farm shop features fresh milk, eggs, meats, and produce. Throughout the summer they offer fresh strawberry pickings almost every day of the week (weather and quantity depending). Strawberry season may have come to a close but you can still fill up a bucket of blackberries on special days for only a few dollars and they have just started their sweet corn picking. Eden’s Garden – Pegram, TN
Maybe you live in an apartment and don’t have room to enjoy your own freshly picked produce, well Eden’s wants everyone to enjoy the pleasure of picking your own food! This amazing organic GMO-free farm offers an easy pick your produce program. Come to the garden and they will escort you through the fields so you can pick your own tomatoes, okra, peppers, sweet, cabbage, potatoes, and more! Their garden is currently filled with an abundance of tomatoes, okra, cucumbers, squash, potatoes, onions, and eggs, produce will change with the seasons. Stoney Creek Farm – Franklin, TN
This small family farm focuses on growing their community through their u-pick garden and education. The farm offers classes time to time on canning and farming. Starting in early summer their U-Pick Garden opens offering fresh corn, squash, zucchini, okra, green beans, tomatoes, and flowers fresh for the pickin’. Leigh and Ollin the owners of Stoney Creek Farm will make you feel right at home in their backyard farm. Bottom View Farm – Portland, TN
Family owned and operated farm is 400 acres of pure wholesome farm magic. The farm features a restaurant, ice cream parlor, catfish lake, acres of fresh produce, and even a little western town for the kids to play in. Bring your lunch and set up at their picnic tables. You can enjoy more than just berry-picking’ at this farm they currently are in blackberry and blueberry season but starting soon you can come out and pick apples and peaches too. Don’t worry in October there is more! Their fall fest is October and features pumpkin picking, a petting zoo, hay rides, and even more fall-filled fun.
